MUSIC

Music is a powerful source of inspiration. Imaginative ideas take on pictorial form when listening to a piece. During the actual process of painting I will usually have music playing, either something that acted as an initial motivation for a painting or which shapes the image as I work on it.

Many of the musical works that inspire me are to be found as montage slide shows on YouTube. The links below are to music videos where the accompanying images are expertly chosen. They reflect musical appreciation that is sensitive, insightful and imaginative. The pieces featured are just a few examples of music that has informed some of my paintings.

Ralph Vaughan Williams

My musical idol

Early English Music such as Thomas Tallis

Although this music was informed by religious beliefs that may seem distant today, I find the spiritual resonance in the perfectly pitched voices other worldly and uplifting.

Anuna

Anuna is a unique ensemble led by Michael McGlynn that draws on traditional musical sources to create exquisite arrangements of largely Irish Celtic folk and sacred music.
